On the Monday we took E to Jodrell Bank to carry on the Space theme. In his usual way, he was overcome with excitement and dropped off for a nap within half a mile of the house. Gee, he can wake up with the grumps, but they soon disappeared and he warmed up by whirling the Solar System display around.
Then it was in to the main display. Think he wondering where the eye piece for this telescope was.
Tried to explain about frequencies....but not as interesting as Black Holes
Spent a lot of time whirling balls into the Black Hole
" Did you see a galaxy?"
"Yes I did"
I didn't mention that it was painted on the centres wall. Think he probably saw some space fingers as well
Back to the Black Hole
Out to the Whispering dishes. Two parabolic dishes about 100m apart. You speak into one and the sound is captured by the other one
" Did Grandad hear that"
Kept running over to check. "Yes he did"
This amused for a long time. It was an inclined plane. You rolled the ball down a track to see if you could get some bells to ring. You then adjusted the bells to try and get them at the same interval.
It was great fun, especially if you could get the ball to fall off at the other end.
Ball fell off ok....so repeat the experiment.
Adjusting the bells
Another experiment about flywheels
Right, time to go....but first lets keep the solar system moving
Tuesday in the garage checking out the engine. How many horsepower. I'm sure it's more than 1
Just checking it out
It's ok...
.....but I like this one
So many buttons and things to play with.
To finish on a random note, We are just getting the harvest from our second pear tree. These are our favourite ones.
The last of the apples, I'm glad to say. I love them but we end up with an apple glut and then a red Pear glut, then we finish with the green pears.
"What would you like for dinner Ed?"
" Pasta with cheese"
"Tough, it's fish"
followed by ..."can I have a leeeetle treat"
